Basil Rajapaksa arrested by FCID

Former Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa was arrested by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), a short while ago on Monday (18) morning. The former Minister was arrested on charges of misappropriation of Divi Neguma funds, an official said. He will be produced before a Magistrate this afternoon. Rajapaksa and three other senior ministry officials were also arrested on April 22, 2015 in connection with a complaint alleging financial fraud in the Divi Neguma Department, which came under the purview of the Economic Development Minister.    Rajapaksa, who left the country for the US on 11 January, 2015 following the defeat of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the January Presidential Election, returned to the island on April 21, 2015.

Fort Magistrate grants bail to Namal

Hambantota District MP and former President’s son Namal Rajapaksa, who was in custody, has been granted bail, Ada Derana reporter said. The suspect was released on a cash bail of Rs.50,000 and three personal bails of Rs.500,000 each after being produced before the Fort Magistrate a short while ago on Monday (18). A protest was also staged in Tangalle in protest over the decision to arrest and remand the Hambantota District MP yesterday. Namal Rajapaksa was arrested as he arrived at the FCID to give a statement on a financial irregularity on July 11. He was questioned by financial police investigating the $650m high-end project in the capital, Colombo.
